Choose the right variety

Select a variety adapted to local conditions and market demand. Key options for raw/processing use in Bihar include:

  • Basrai/Basirhat – commonly used for cooking in the region; sturdy pseudostem and good bunch formation.
  • Grand Naine (Dwarf Cavendish) – popular for both green fruit and table use; easy to manage and high packing quality.
  • Rasthali/Champa – acceptable for local markets and tolerant of varied soils.

Site selection and soil requirements

Banana grows best where:

  • There is full sun and protection from strong, drying winds (use windbreaks if needed).
