Why grow gladiolus in Maharashtra?

Gladiolus is a widely traded cut flower and a good rotational crop for small to medium flower growers. In Maharashtra you can produce spikes for local markets, city florists and for corm production. With proper timing and postharvest handling you can supply festivals, weddings and weekly markets when prices are favourable.

Climate and site selection

Gladiolus prefers cool, bright conditions for spike development and clear, well-drained soils. In Maharashtra aim to grow in areas with:

  • Temperatures: optimum 15–25°C during flowering. Hot humid weather reduces spike quality and vase life.
  • Exposure: full sun but protected from strong, hot afternoon winds that cause desiccation.
  • Drainage: avoid waterlogged low-lying plots. Raised beds or ridges help in heavy soils.

Coastal lowlands can be used in the cooler months if humidity is controlled; plateau and highland sites often produce better quality spikes due to cooler nights.

Soil and land preparation

Avoid excess nitrogen late in the crop as it promotes soft growth and reduces spike quality.

Pest and disease management
