Variety selection and seed preparation

Popular types include medium-duration and short-duration cultivars — pick a proven one from your local KVK or agricultural department. For seed: use certified or quality farm-saved seed that is well-dried and sound.

  • Micronutrients: Zinc and boron deficiencies occur on some soils — apply zinc sulfate as a basal or foliar spray if deficiency is suspected.

Water management and irrigation

Ragi is drought-tolerant but benefits from timely moisture, especially at germination and grain filling.

  • Rainfed: Align sowing to expected rains. Conserve soil moisture with bunds, mulches, and minimal tillage.
  • Irrigated: Critical irrigations are at establishment, panicle initiation and grain filling. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Water-saving: Use broad bed and furrow or paired-row planting where feasible; mulching and inter-row earthing up reduce evaporation.

Weed, pest and disease management

Early vigorous crop growth and clean tilth reduce weed pressure. Hand weeding or inter-culture with a hoe at 20–30 days and again at 45–60 days usually suffices for small fields.

  • Common pests: Shoot fly, stem borer and armyworms may appear. Monitor and remove infested plants; use pheromone traps or biocontrols where recommended. Apply insecticide only based on threshold.
  • Diseases: Blast and finger rot can occur in humid conditions. Use tolerant varieties, balanced fertilization, and avoid prolonged leaf wetness. Remove residues and rotate crops to break disease cycles.
  • Integrated pest management: Use field sanitation, resistant varieties, timely sowing, and biologicals to reduce chemical dependency.

Intercultural practices and agronomic tips

  • Thin stands if plants are overcrowded to maintain proper spacing; this improves panicle size and grain filling.
  • Top-dress nitrogen once at tillering to boost yield; avoid late high N that delays maturity and increases lodging risk.
  • Stagger sowing across a small area to spread labor for harvesting and to reduce risk from weather events.

Harvesting and threshing

Harvest when grains are firm and husks are dry — typically when panicles have a golden-brown color and grains rattle. Delayed harvesting risks shattering and quality loss from rains or birds.

  • Harvesting: Cut panicles or entire plants depending on equipment and labor. For manual cutting, gather in bundles and sun-dry for a few days to reach safe moisture.
  • Threshing: Use light beating on a threshing floor or a small thresher. Avoid excessive beating that breaks grains and reduces market value.
  • Winnowing and cleaning: Remove chaff, broken grains and foreign matter; clean grain commands better prices.

Drying, storage and quality preservation

Moisture management is critical. Dry grains to below 12–13% moisture for safe storage to avoid mould and insect damage.

  • Sun-drying: Spread grains thinly on a clean floor and turn frequently. Protect from dust and birds.
  • Storage: Use clean, dry jute or gunny bags; for longer storage consider airtight containers or metal bins. Treat storage with diatomaceous earth or neem leaves where appropriate to reduce storage pests.
  • Hygiene: Store only bright, clean, and well-dried grain — impurities invite pests and lower price.

Post-harvest grading and value addition

Grading improves marketability. Separate broken grains, discolored seed, and chaff. Consider value addition options:

  • Processing into flour (ragi flour/ ragi malt) for higher margins — ensure hygienic processing and packaging.
  • Flour for health foods and breweries for malt-based products are emerging niche markets.

Markets for ragi include local grain markets, retail health-food outlets, direct-to-consumer sales, and institutional buyers. Explore options and match quality to buyer requirements.

  • Local mandis and traders take bulk produce but often offer farm-gate prices; clean and graded lots fetch better rates.
  • Direct sale: Link with small-scale processors or health-food brands — they pay a premium for consistent quality and supply.
  • Collective marketing: Farmer groups or cooperatives can aggregate produce, negotiate better prices and access premium buyers.

Risk management and practical recommendations

  • Keep records of seed source, inputs and yield to identify what works on your farm.
  • Maintain crop rotation (pulses, oilseeds) to manage pests and build soil fertility.
  • Use staggered planting and small-scale irrigation to spread harvest and reduce weather-related losses.
  • Build relationships with at least two buyers before harvest to avoid distress sales.
