Basil is a herb crop, grown in the kharif · zaid season. Sow it in Feb–Mar, Jun and expect to harvest in 60–80 days. It wants a pH of 5.5–7.0 (slightly acid) and 18–30°C. Plant at 45 × 30 cm, allowing 2–3 kg of seed per hectare. A good crop returns around 15–25 t. Watch for downy mildew, aphid.
